आज के Quantum Computers: NISQ Era
अगर qubits इतने powerful हैं, तो आज के quantum computers में सिर्फ कुछ दर्जन या कुछ सौ ही क्यों होते हैं — जबकि आपके laptop में billions of transistors हैं? Short answer: qubit एक prima donna है। यह तभी quantum रहता है जब दुनिया से protected हो, और 1 qubit को protect करना मुश्किल है; 1,000 को protect करना — हर एक wired, हर एक पड़ोसियों से बात करता हुआ — enormously ज़्यादा मुश्किल।

इसीलिए हम "सिर्फ कुछ qubits" के पीछे भागते हैं — और इसीलिए जिस era में हम जी रहे हैं, उसका एक नाम है: NISQ, Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (2018 में John Preskill का दिया शब्द)। Noisy: error rates high हैं और error-correcting codes अभी practical use में नहीं हैं — हर operation थोड़ा-बहुत ग़लत होता है। Intermediate-scale: qubit counts दसियों से सैकड़ों में हैं — कुछ से कहीं ज़्यादा, लेकिन उन millions से कहीं कम जो fault-tolerant algorithms को चाहिए होंगे।

100 noisy qubits, 10 excellent qubits से हार सकते हैं। इसीलिए field ने raw count से बेहतर yardsticks बनाए: quantum volume qubit count और error rates को एक number में जोड़ता है, और CLOPS — circuit layer operations per second — मापता है कि machine असल में कितनी तेज़ circuits चलाती है। किसी भी quantum computer के बारे में सही सवाल कभी "कितने qubits हैं?" नहीं होता, बल्कि "noise हावी होने से पहले यह कौन-सा काम का circuit चला सकती है?" होता है।

Quantum volume (QV) एक ही number में यह जवाब देने की कोशिश करता है: "यह machine कितनी बड़ी सफल computation चला सकती है?"
